Summer came, and then it went. For those of us who worked and/or went to school this summer (aka, all of us), you could hardly say that the past few months constituted a “vacation.” Fortunately for us, though, law school doesn’t care about breaks, physical fitness, the beach, tans, or really anything related to happiness at all. If it did, maybe there would be more of us returning to USD all bronzed and beautiful. However, fear not–that’s why we have the 1Ls.
It is safe to say, though, that most of us are coming to USD’s campus today with something weighing heavily on our minds.
First, you have the 1Ls, who, having read One L and having watched Paper Chase and Legally Blonde about five thousand times each this past summer, really are just one big mess of emotions:
“WHO WANTS TO FORM A STUDY GROUP TO BEGIN DISSECTING THE PROFESSOR’S SEATING CHART POLICY??” and “WHO HAS AN OUTLINE!?!” and “WHY IS IT SO FUNNY THAT I HAVE CIV PRO WITH ROY BROOKS!?!”
Then, there are the 2Ls, who either attended the first Bar Review to meet and take advantage of naive 1Ls, or who simply slept through Bar Review entirely. These are the students who are coming back to school for their second year with the system finally down, but who are really much more concerned with preparing for their up and coming OCI interviews and/or plotting a way to destroy the other students who got interviews in the first place.
And then there are the 3Ls, who really aren’t anywhere to be seen on campus. Half of them are still traveling or sleeping, while the other half have ditched out class to rather focus their efforts on preparing for the Bar.
Whatever year in school you may be, we all share the same thing in common: a new year full of unknowns. So here’s to law school, here’s to survival, here’s to competition, and here’s to hopefully enjoying every step of it along the way. Good luck, friends. Good luck.
