Petition To Expand USD Law Student Distinctions

PETITION TO EXPAND USD STUDENT DISTINCTIONS

Honorable University School Board
University of San Diego, School of Law
5998 Alcala Park
San Diego, CA 92110

Honorable School Board of the University of San Diego (“USD”), School of Law

We, the students and faculty of USD, request the Honorable School Board to vote in favor of adopting the following amendments to Rule II of the Academic Rules:

  1. Expand the Cum Laude honor roll under Rule II.A. of the Academic Rules to a percentage anywhere between the top 25% to 40% of the graduating senior class and Expand the Magna Cum Laude honor roll under Rule II.A. of the Academic Rules to a percent anywhere between the top 7% to 15% of the graduating senior class and Expand the Summa Cum Laude honor roll under Rule II.A. of the Academic Rules to a percentage anywhere between the top 2% to 5% of the graduating senior class.
  2. Adopt additional honorary titles based on specific criterias for those who fall below Cum Laude to apply for the consideration of a board to receive an honorary title.
  3. Permit retroactive application of the Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude expansion in accordance with Rule II.B. of the Academic Rules to benefit Alumni and consider reciprocity of appreciation through charity or networking to USD’s School of Law.

We, the students and faculty, believe strongly that these amendments are reasonable because:

  1. Expansion of Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laudeis reasonable because:
    1. The industry average of law schools for Cum Laude is approximately between 25% to 30% and for Magna Cum Laude is approximately between 7.5% to 10%.
    2. The marketability of USD law students against peers of tier one schools would benefit greatly from such distinctions including Latin Honors Awards to attain better jobs and succeed in an increasingly competitive market.
  2. Adoption of other honorary titles is reasonable because:
    1. Many law schools who do not utilize a Latin Honors Awards system provide for honorary titles and distinctions specific to certain criteria and fields of law.
    2. The marketability of USD law students who have not attained Latin Honorary standing would increase using other distinctions and attain better jobs in an increasingly competitive market.
  3. Retroactive application of the above honorary distinctions is reasonable because:
    1. The current Academic Rules provide for it.
    2. USD Alumni will become more marketable and return the recognition through charity, networking, or other collaboration with USD and USD students.
